What changed,
version by version

Every release of Trichroma Lab since 1.0, newest first — the same notes the application shows when it offers you the update.

1.2.0

TRICHROMA, Trichroma Lab's own print look, joins PAKON and FRONTIER. LAB gains a GRID view of the roll and COLOUR SLOPE. A narrowband lamp can now be shot as RGB in one shot, and a whole film strip scanned into one file comes in as its frames.

Please know before you start

  • A roll shot as RGB in one shot opens only in this version or newer. Every other roll keeps its format, and rolls written by 1.1.0 still open in 1.1.0.

New

  • TRICHROMA, Trichroma Lab's own print look, next to PAKON and FRONTIER in every LOOK switch: golden highlights and a warm middle on colour negatives. It is chosen per roll, and each look keeps its own corrections, so switching never loses your work. Like PAKON, it needs a roll the Pakon front end can read; on any other roll it prints the Frontier's chain and says so.
  • GRID in LAB: the roll as sharp tiles in place of the canvas, 1 to 6 in a row. Switch views in the window bar, with ⇧G, or with ⌘1 and ⌘2, and double-click a tile to open that frame in the full console. A correction made on a frame of a selection moves every selected frame by the same step.
  • COLOUR SLOPE under CORRECTION: three rows, C, M and Y, that tilt the colour from the shadows to the highlights, on colour negatives under every look.
  • RGB in one shot: one exposure under all three diodes of a narrowband lamp, separated into the three bands. Choose Narrowband RGB ×1 in MERGE and calibrate it in the new RGB · ONE SHOT well in CALIBRATE; without a calibration, MERGE & PROCESS asks which lamp the roll was shot under. A shot that clips in any colour is refused with a sentence that says which.
  • A whole film strip in one scanner file, including tiled BigTIFFs, splits into its frames on import. A strip whose gaps cannot be found stays one long frame, as before.
  • FORMAT on the contact sheet: choose the frame format, from ½ and 24×36 to XPan and 6×4.5 up to 6×17, and the roll remembers it.

Changed

  • LOOK is now a card on the left rail of LAB and in SET UP THE ROLL, each look framed in its own colour: PAKON red, FRONTIER green, TRICHROMA in the three colours of the mark.
  • LAB is quicker to work in: right-click the right rail to choose its PANELS, separately for the full console and GRID; the left rail can be put away; folded panels stay folded; ⏎ goes to the next frame; the arrows and the CORRECTION gear are larger, and a click anywhere on a panel's header folds it.
  • EXPORT opens on the settings and folder you used last, and contact sheet strips lie straight unless you lay them askew.
  • An R, G, B roll without a flat now takes its light from the film's rebate, frame by frame, under the film stock you name, and stands on FROM REBATE in LAB.

Fixed

  • A turned or flipped frame no longer stands upside down in the PAKON LOOK card, the tone tiles and the trash, next to the straight canvas.
  • CALIBRATE no longer empties the R, G, B calibration you have just made when you switch to WHITE and back.
  • Raw previews of some cameras, among them the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV, are no longer turned a quarter, so AUTO BASE AREA finds the frames where they are.

1.1.0

A library of your rolls as the home of LAB, dust removal from a scanner's infrared, support for monochrome cameras, contact sheets in pages, PNG export and keyboard shortcuts you can change. Roll files are about half the size.

Please know before you start

  • A roll written by this version opens only in this version or newer. PROCESS now packs the raw data inside the roll without loss, and Trichroma Lab 1.0.1 and earlier refuse such a roll with one sentence. Rolls you already have keep their old format and still open in both.
  • Frames on the FRONTIER look can come out slightly different from 1.0.1. PAKON frames and E-6 slides export exactly as before. Export again if a file has to match one you made with 1.0.1.

New

  • LAB opens on your rolls when no roll is open: a card for each roll you have opened or processed, with its frames, process, station and date, as cards or as a list. Rolls PROCESS has just written are marked NEW, and a roll whose file has moved offers LOCATE….
  • DUST REMOVAL (Pro) takes dust and scratches out of scanner rolls that carry an infrared channel, such as 64-bit RGBI TIFFs from VueScan. Choose its strength, from Off to Strong, when you set up the roll, and change it later in LAB under the new CAPTURE tab. A roll processed before this version needs a new PROCESS to pick up the infrared. Silver black-and-white film is left alone, because silver blocks infrared just as dust does.
  • Monochrome cameras: grey 16-bit TIFFs from a sensor without a colour filter, one file per band named _R, _G and _B, go through MERGE, CALIBRATE and PROCESS like raw files. The camera's black level goes in the new BLACK panel in MERGE, or MEASURE FROM A DARK SHOT… reads it from one exposure taken with the light off.
  • Contact sheets in pages: one film roll per sheet, 135, 120 or 220, so a long roll exports as name_01.jpg, name_02.jpg and so on, and LAB turns the pages. The sheet is made from the previews LAB already holds, so it appears without developing the roll again. EXPORT can write the sheet next to the frames, and 35 more film edges arrived (Kodak, Fujifilm, Ilford and Lomography on 35 mm and 120, E-6 slides among them).
  • PNG in EXPORT, at 8 or 16 bits. Exported frames now carry 300 DPI, and every exported file names the version of Trichroma Lab that wrote it.
  • SETTINGS ▸ SHORTCUTS: every keyboard shortcut can be changed. A key that is already taken asks before it moves, and a key typed into an open sheet no longer rates the frame behind it.

Changed

  • LENS moved into the new CAPTURE tab on the left rail of LAB. On a scanner roll, DUST REMOVAL takes its place, and without an infrared channel it stays off and says why. The left rail is wider, and LOOK fits in one row.
  • COLOR MODE is now the PAKON LOOK card, with a picture of the frame in each mode, F-135 and HR-500, to choose from.
  • Roll files are about half the size, with the image bit for bit the same, and a roll no longer grows each time it is opened after an update.

Fixed

  • Very rarely, PROCESS read one colour channel of one frame with another camera's white level, which gave that frame a strong cast, and the roll's base could follow it. Some Fujifilm GFX models were among the cameras affected. If a roll has such a frame, process it again.
  • Scanner rolls no longer turn cyan when a thin strip of bare lamp shows at the edge of a scan. REDEVELOP BASE AREA… now works on scanner rolls kept whole; on a roll that already came out cyan, use it or process the roll again.
  • MERGE no longer shows 0 FRAMES when the shots of a frame were taken slowly. Files named in order stay together, a fast automatic R-G-B sequence makes one frame for every three files, a NEW FRAME row takes a dropped file, and files left over are counted as UNMATCHED.
  • On a Mac, the graphics-card preview no longer scrambles or shifts the sharp image of frames of certain sizes when zoomed in, and SKIN there now matches the export.

1.0.1

Lens distortion correction for a whole roll, a COLOR MODE choice for PAKON frames, and a licence that now needs one connection per engine version.

Please know before you start

  • The Windows installer is still not code-signed, so SmartScreen asks for More info, then Run anyway.
  • A licence key or the trial is still needed. Your early-access key keeps working until 31 December 2026, with every feature on.
  • Each version of Trichroma Lab needs one connection to pick up the engine key for that version. A lifetime licence then works offline on the version it last unlocked; install a newer build (or go back to an older one) and it asks once more. If the key has not arrived yet, LICENCE says CONNECTION DUE and check now fetches it in one call.
  • A licence that has ended no longer stops the work in front of you. The window stays open — rolls open, grading and exports finish — but MERGE & PROCESS and importing into MERGE refuse with the LICENCE sheet, and at the next start the application does not open until the licence is back.

New

  • LENS — lens distortion correction per roll, the third tab on the left rail in LAB. One slider from barrel to pincushion, with guide lines over the frame (GRID) and the canvas image redrawn live as you move it; APPLY reads the whole roll again through the lens, so every frame changes geometry and is re-detected — the base area, the registration, the frame automatics and the faces are all found again in the straightened image. HISTORY and your manual crops survive it. Available for camera rolls that kept the whole sensor; scanner rolls and trimmed rolls say why the slider is not there.
  • COLOR MODE for PAKON frames: choose F-135, HR-500 V2 or HR-500 V3 per frame, in the right rail above CORRECTION, with a preview on hover and its own group in COPY, SYNC and RESET. Frames with no choice stay on F-135, so older rolls come out exactly as before.
  • The white meter shows where to aim: the 60–92 % window is now hatched in CALIBRATE and in the FLATS panels of MERGE and LAB, and the WHITE sheet prints the level large, in the colour of its zone, with AIM 60–92 % under it. An empty MERGE has a HOW TO START ↗ line that opens the quick start for the light on your table.

Changed

  • HISTORY is now the last tab on the left rail, after the new LENS tab.
  • LICENCE confirms an activation: a successful key or trial shows ACTIVATED with a thank-you and one CONTINUE button, instead of leaving the sheet standing over the key you just typed as if nothing had happened.
  • When the licence server cannot reach the store, LICENCE now says so instead of telling you to check a connection that was working all along.

Fixed

  • The sharper image under CROP no longer separates from the frame when you rotate it. With a rotation applied, the high-quality overlay stayed unrotated over the turned image — two images visibly out of register. It is now drawn with the frame, both while you drag the angle and after you let go.

Faster

  • Develop through a lens is close to free: full-size develop through the LENS correction now costs 1.13–1.39× the plain path instead of 3.7–4.8×, and an export with a lens runs 1.01–1.28× a normal one.
  • Rolls with rotation or sub-pixel registration shift develop faster too — 1.15–1.27× the fast path, where it used to be 3.6–3.7×. On the rolls we measured this is most channels, so ordinary exports and PROCESS runs on slightly tilted or shifted rolls get noticeably quicker.

1.0.0

Trichroma Lab 1.0: the first release on sale, in two plans — Personal and Pro — with exports that queue and run while you work, and a contact sheet for every roll.

Please know before you start

  • Your early-access key keeps working until 31 December 2026, with every feature on, exactly as before. Nothing changes until you choose a plan.
  • Personal or Pro. Personal has everything you need to develop your own rolls. Pro adds the 16-bit colour chain, the graphics-card preview, background runs and FRONTIER PRO; on Personal these stay on screen, locked, with UPGRADE beside them. LICENCE now says which plan a key is, and BUY opens the plans at trichromalab.com/pricing. A new key goes into LICENCE as before.

New

  • Exports are tasks in a queue. EXPORT… always opens the form; each export gets its own progress sheet and a card in the task menu, where the queue can be reordered by its handle, and CANCEL asks before it stops anything. IN BACKGROUND takes the roll off LAB while the export keeps working on it, so the next roll can be opened and exported at once.
  • PROCESS has a progress sheet too: SHOW on the run's card puts it over whatever is on screen, and a finished run leaves its card in the task menu.
  • A contact sheet for every roll: the roll's strip in LAB (click a frame to go to it), and CONTACT in EXPORT writes it as one image, with film edges measured from real scans of Kodak ColorPlus, Portra, UltraMax, Vision3 250D and 500T, Portra 800 120 and Fujifilm PRO 400H 120.
  • SHOW IN FINDER (OPEN FOLDER on Windows) after an export or a PROCESS picks out the file that was written, not just its folder.

Changed

  • In LAB the arrow keys always step through the frames, and H and V flip the frame.

Fixed

  • No more streaks on Macs with 8 GB of memory: the window is drawn through Skia on macOS.
  • The arrow keys no longer scroll the BASE AREA sheet hidden under the PROCESS progress sheet.
